'Shades of Grey' is to be a film document, essay and visual poem on the city of Aberdeen. Aberdeen has many nicknames - 'Silver City', Granite City' or 'Grey City' all due to Granites domination as the building material of choice for several centenaries. In the past quarter of century the city has being titled as the 'Oil Capital of Europe' due to its business and geographic role within the energy sector. With its geographic proximity to the North Sea, Granite architecture, oil industry dominance and Calvinist past the outside perception of Aberdeen is often being at times a harsh and and formidable place - grey city, grey people - a grey life. This perception has been further compounded by the cites current uncertain future, both economically and politically.
Off course the truth is somewhat more complex than that, Aberdeen is a city it is said that 'if you spend enough time is difficult not to fall in love with it'. It is a place of contrasts; containing some of the wealthiest postcode in the country within a short distance of some of the countries most socially deprived areas, despite its relatively small size it has bore more than its fair share of prominent figures in industry and culture and its contradictorily perception as a 'remote' location despite its population encompassing a wealth of nationalities dues to its position within international commercial trading.
'Shades of Grey' pays tribute to the city while acknowledging its characterisitc flaws, with hat tips to its famous figures, places and residents.
The film is supported by the Aberdeen Visual Arts Award (Creative Scotland, Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council).
